The Last Stand of The New York Institute: Review

Synopsis:

Magnus meets Valentine in battle as the Circle attacks the Downworlders of New York City.

In the time of the Uprising, Valentine’s Circle goes after Downworlders in New York...and the Shadowhunters of the Institute must decide whether to join him, or fight with Magnus and his kind. This is the first time Magnus sees Jocelyn, Luke, and Stephen—but not the last. It is not long before Jocelyn seeks him out...

***

The Last Stand of The New York Institute holds a special place in my heart. It's the direct prequel of The Mortal Instruments, at the time right before and after the Uprising. Magnus meets Stephen Herondale, which, apparently, is nothing like Edmund (though they have similar faces, and according to Magnus' words, twice as angelic). There's not much about Stephen Herondale, though he might actually be one Herondale that I don't like.

And the constant appearance of Tessa is very comforting. I always like Tessa, for her endless hope and faith on the mortals, which is something rare among warlocks. And she will always protect her descendants, those who are still Shadowhunters, living in Los Angeles. The second part of the story is directly about Clary. And... I know it! It involves Tessa and a certain Silent Brother. All the echos of the past are resurfacing. It's both comforting and heartbreaking at the same time.

So yeah, this might actually be one of the best shorts in the Bane Chronicles :) And of course, the one I want most will be released on January. MALEC.

Huh, a story set in the time of the Circle and the Uprising? Nice. That's like a direct prequel story of The Mortal Instruments :)

The Fall of Hotel Dumort: Review

Synopsis:

Magnus Bane watches the once-glamorous Hotel Dumort become something else altogether in 1970s New York City.

Fifty years after the Jazz Age rise of the Hotel Dumort, immortal warlock Magnus Bane knows the Manhattan landmark is on the decline. The once-beautiful Hotel Dumort has fallen into a decayed thing, a ruin, as dead as a place can be. But the vampires don't mind...

***

It's a nice read. Although America in the seventies is not one of my favorite ages, it's a wonderful and dark age for mankind/mundanes. I'm surprised The Fall of Hotel Dumort is closely associated with drugs. Not the supernatural kind of drugs, but a surprisingly human one --- cocaine. Never in a million years will I think of a drug as mundane as cocaine will be involved in something beyond mundane's understanding. Nice surprise, indeed.

And the fact that Camille plays a part brings out my curiosity. Camille's never one of my favorite characters but she's mysterious that I would like to know who she really is. Apparently we still don't get her real inner self but it's still interesting to see her purring all over the place. The ending is a little lame though. But overall the novella is good enough. Unfortunately the next is The Last Stand of The New York Institute. Well, maybe not "unfortunate", but we have to wait until January 21, 2014 for The Course of True Love, one of my most anticipated novella since The Midnight Heir. (I mean, MALEC!!!)

This week I choose The Fall of Hotel Dumort (The Bane Chronicles Part 7) by Cassandra Clare and Maureen Johnson

And a hundred years seemed to vanish. Magnus felt himself unable to speak for a moment. It might as well have been London again, the whole twentieth century rolled up into a ball and tossed aside.

The Rise of Hotel Dumort: Review

Synopsis:

In 1920s Manhattan, Magnus Bane hobnobs with the elite at a glamorous Jazz Age hotspot.

The immortal Magnus Bane is making the most of his time in the Roaring Twenties: He's settled into New York society and is thriving among the fashionable jazz set. And there is nowhere better to see and be seen than the glamorous Hotel Dumort, a glittering new addition to the Manhattan landscape. But a different type of glamour may be at play...

***

The Rise of Hotel Dumort is set in New York (Finally) and it's about a new landmark in the 1920s named Hotel Dumort. A landmark that fans of The Mortal Instruments are familiar with. But even the brightness of the new landmark can't prevent dark magic at play. This is one of the more interesting adventures so far in TBC. It's pretty epic with the second last part of the story. Although it's way too short because I can see that a lot more struggling can be portrayed in this story.

This story does not involve any Shadowhunters that we are familiar with. It's a good thing though. I mean, since that Magnus is a warlock constantly associating with Shadowhunters, his stories are often intertwined with them. This time there are not much about them and none we are familiar with and we can focus more on Magnus's journey. I know a lot more about him then I did in the previous short novellas. He might be a warlock. He might have demon blood, but he is not evil.

Cover Reveal: The Rise of Hotel Dumort by Cassandra Clare and Maureen Johnson

Ooh, the first short story in TBC about the pre-vampire Hotel Dumort! Interesting... now here's the cover:

The Rise of Hotel Dumort will be released on August 20, 2013

You know what the messed up part is? This short story is supposed to be about Hotel Dumort and Manhattan and new life, and all I can think about is: 1920s? So Will is still alive and they're still happy together! Sorry for the outburst.

The Runaway Queen: Review

Synopsis:

Magnus Bane has a royal role in the French Revolution—if the angry mobs don’t spoil his spells. One of ten adventures in The Bane Chronicles.

While in France, immortal warlock Magnus Bane finds himself attempting to rescue the royal family from the horrors of the French Revolution—after being roped into this mess by a most attractive count. Naturally, the daring escape calls for invisible air balloons…

This standalone e-only short story illuminates the life of the enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose alluring personality populates the pages of the #1 New York Times bestselling series, The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series. This story in The Bane Chronicles, The Runaway Queen, is written by Maureen Johnson and Cassandra Clare.

***

It's a really nice short story. Maybe not as hilarious as What Really Happened In Peru (honestly, the whole Magnus-wanted-to-start-his-new-life-as-a-cactus thing still amuses me). It's exciting for a short story with only 60 pages and it's a really, really fast read. Getting a glimpse of Magnus' life in Paris is really nice. Paris is a city of lights and love yet in this story, there's a infinite dark side about it and I love every single part.

The thing that really surprises me is the black-haired and blued-eyed boy (Cassie, are you trying to torture us with these facial features?). I think that kind of explains why Magnus has a soft spot for blue eyes. The ending is good too, if not a bit emotional. You know, about mortals having a short but glorious lifespan and immortals living forever and watching those around them die. Overall it's a short and sweet read. Maybe not a must, but you will like this story.

(I think The Midnight Heir will be a must though... XD)

Name, Cover Reveal

Names and covers. Always and forever my favorite. And we have a bunch of awesome things here:

1. Cover Reveal: The Runaway Queen (The Bane Chronicles Part 2) by Cassandra Clare and Maureen Johnson

Now I know what Cassie means by "The Bane Chronicles' cover will be a combination of a little bit of each cover"! And really gorgeous hand... for a warlock XD

2. Name Reveal: Taken #2 by Erin Bowman

Actually I just see the name by accident. But then, it's a nice name. Although I wonder what that means... here's it:

Interesting...

Frozen will be released in 2014 (no more accurate information about the release day, sorry)

3. Name Reveal: Daughter of Smoke and Bone #3 by Laini Taylor

The popular sequel of Days of Blood and Starlight finally has a name. Truth to be told, I'm quite pissed when I found out this book isn't released until April 2014. But finally the name is here and... aww, it is a beautiful name:

Dreams of Gods and Monsters

See that? This is surely one of my favorite book names in this year! Does that mean angels and demons can co-exist without constantly irking each other? Because that will be the best news for not just Karou and Akiva, but also us!

And just for a tease, here's the not-so-much-of-a-cover cover with the book's name on it:

I have a feeling this will be a gorgeous cover! I wonder who will be behind the words (probably Karou) and how he/she will dress...

Gonna Read: May 2013

May 2013 is not a month for books. Mainly because APRIL (And October!) is the month(s) for books. Another reason is... I've got an annual exam at school to prepare and this can get really intense so I don't really have time for so much books...

Anyway. I really wanna read these books:

1. Icons (Icons #1) by Margaret Stohl

Your heart beats only with their permission.

Everything changed on The Day. The day the windows shattered. The day the power stopped. The day Dol's family dropped dead. The day Earth lost a war it didn't know it was fighting.

Since then, Dol has lived a simple life in the countryside -- safe from the shadow of the Icon and its terrifying power. Hiding from the one truth she can't avoid.

She's different. She survived. Why?

When Dol and her best friend, Ro, are captured and taken to the Embassy, off the coast of the sprawling metropolis once known as the City of Angels, they find only more questions. While Ro and fellow hostage Tima rage against their captors, Dol finds herself drawn to Lucas, the Ambassador's privileged son. But the four teens are more alike than they might think, and the timing of their meeting isn't a coincidence. It's a conspiracy.

Within the Icon's reach, Dol, Ro, Tima, and Lucas discover that their uncontrollable emotions -- which they've always thought to be their greatest weaknesses -- may actually be their greatest strengths.

Bestselling author Margaret Stohl delivers the first book in a heart-pounding series set in a haunting new world where four teens must piece together the mysteries of their pasts -- in order to save the future.

He’s arrogant, domineering, and—To. Die. For…

Hunter is a ruthless killer. The Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe him too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job, that is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: Protect a human from his mortal enemy.

Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into a walking glow stick. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.

4. Of Triton (Of Poseidon #2) by Anna Banks

In this sequel to OF POSEIDON, Emma has just learned that her mother is a long-lost Poseidon princess, and now struggles with an identity crisis: As a Half-Breed, she’s a freak in the human world and an abomination in the Syrena realm below. Syrena law states that all Half- Breeds should be put to death.

As if that’s not bad enough, her mother’s reappearance among the Syrena turns the two kingdoms—Poseidon and Triton—against one another. Which leaves Emma with a decision to make: Should she comply with Galen’s request to keep herself safe and just hope for the best? Or should she risk it all and reveal herself—and her Gift—to save a people she’s never known?

Expected Publication: May 28, 2013

(Warning: Don't expected many May new releases reviews. There might be some more other reviews that are April releases or other books. But generally, there won't be as much review as in April or... January.)

What Really Happened In Peru: Review

Synopsis:

Fans of The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices know that Magnus Bane is banned from Peru—and now they can find out why. One of ten adventures in The Bane Chronicles.

There are good reasons Peru is off-limits to Magnus Bane. Follow Magnus’s Peruvian escapades as he drags his fellow warlocks Ragnor Fell and Catarina Loss into trouble, learns several instruments (which he plays shockingly), dances (which he does shockingly), and disgraces his host nation by doing something unspeakable to the Nazca Lines.

This standalone e-only short story illuminates the life of the enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose alluring personality populates the pages of the #1 New York Times bestselling series, The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series. This story in The Bane Chronicles, What Really Happened in Peru, is written by Sarah Rees Brennan and Cassandra Clare.

***

First off: Lemme have some time swooning. I mean, it's MAGNUS BANE! The sexy, sexy High Warlock of Brooklyn.... in 2007. This is the first short story of him. And if you read City of Lost Souls, you will definitely know this:

"Of course it's not okay with me. I'm a teenage boy. As far as I'm concerned, this is the worst thing that's happened since I found out why Magnus was banned from Peru."

--- Jace Lightwood, Page 538 of City of Lost Souls (Walker Books)

Yeah, and that's the story of Why Magnus was banned from Peru.

I'm so curious about why Magnus was banned from Peru. And I wasn't surprised that Cassie gave us an ending like... that. But this short story didn't disappoint me. Not even a bit. The story is just freaking hilarious that I can't stop laughing and giggling. Magnus is just so funny in the book. Sure, there are some mature-warlock moments and a certain Herondale-moment (Admit it, you heart is freshly broken and repaired and broken again time by time just by seeing/hearing the name Herondale). But the plot line is one of my favorite. I personally love the story of 1890 in Peru. Why? You need to read it yourself. But I'm sure you'll be laughing your guts out (okay, that sounds a little disgusting, but it's the truth).

Ragnor Fell and Catarina Loss are great characters in this short story. I mean, I know that Catarina is nice in City of Fallen Angels. But I know almost nothing about Ragnor Fell because there's not much about him in TID and... nothing in CoG. I love the two warlocks right from the time they start to show up. More about Ragnor Fell and Catarina Loss, please. ;)

JAMES. FREAKING. HERONDALE. Aww, I can't wait for the Herondale moments. Although I'm a little bit scared...

The Bane Chronicles: Snippet

Another Bane Chronicles snippet! Another Magnus moment! And... another JAMES HERONDALE moment! Although something provokes me a little...

(Warning: beware of Clockwork Princess spoilers if you haven't read CP2 yet. Avoid this if you don't want to be spoiled)

He had not seemed to want to be taken from the cold depths of the water: had fought Magnus as he dragged him out, then laid his pale cheek against the dank earth of the riverbank, and hid his face in his arms.

For a moment Magnus had thought he was crying, but as he stooped down to check on the boy he found he was barely conscious. With his cruel golden eyes closed, he once again reminded Magnus of the lost boy Will had been: Magnus touched his damp hair gently, and said “James,” in as kind a voice as he could.

His eyes were shut, black lashes ink-dark crescents against the marble-pale lines of his cheekbones. Sparkling drops of water were caught in the curling ends of those lashes: he looked unhappy as he slept in a way he did not when awake.

***

What do you mean by "he had not seemed to want to be taken from the cold depths of water"? Did James want to drown himself? Why? And his CRUEL golden eyes? Why are they cruel? And "he looked unhappy as he slept in a way he did not when awake"? What is wrong with him? Apparently he is nothing like Will in personality. Yes, Will is cruel at times. But with good reasons. Or is James lost, like Will did? Damn, the Herondale boys are killing me. More TLH feels again.

The Bane Chronicles: Snippet

Another snippet from The Bane Chronicles! But actually, I would call that a TLH snippet instead of Bane Chronicles snippet, although the main character is still, you know, Magnus.

(Warning: This is of the utmost spoilery for readers who haven't read Clockwork Princess. Avoid this if you don't want to be spoiled)

This boy had pale amber eyes, like a crystal glass filled brimful with crisp white wine and held
up to catch the light of the sun. Magnus could not imagine these eyes as tender. The boy was
lovely, but his was a beauty like that Helen of Troy might have had once, disaster written in
every line. The light of his beauty made Magnus think of cities burning.

Fog and gaslight receded into memory. His momentary lapse into foolish nostalgia was over.
This was not Will. That broken, beautiful boy would be a man now, and this boy was a
stranger.

“I,” the boy announced, “am James Herondale.”

***

James. Freaking. Herondale. And he has AMBER eyes (although I wonder where his amber eyes come from). No wonder Jace has amber eyes. That doesn't matter even if Steven Herondale has/had blue eyes like Will does/did. Genetics are always beyond our imagination. But damn, sounds like he is sooooooo much like Will! *All the TID feels*

And what does James want with Magnus? It seems like he's BROKEN. And HARD. I kind of imagine him as an almost-exact replica of Will. Ugh, it's not about Magnus Bane anymore. It's TLH feels, and the series hasn't even officially announced yet. Are you trying to kill us, Cassie?

I am like this now:

Sorry if the burst of feels annoys you. But I'm still healing from the Clockwork Princess feels.

Everything to do with Magnus is fun! But I love how nice & welcoming Cassie Clare’s fans are to us about The Bane Chronicles.

The beauty of Magnus’s wardrobe is that if you ever think ‘would Magnus wear…’ you instantly go ‘YES HE WOULD.’

Magnus has had many romances over the centuries…Maureen Johnson came up with a very EXCITING one.

8. On what THE BANE CHRONICLES are about:
The different stories will be about different points in his life, yes–Peru, Alec, Camille, France, NYC in different decades…

9. On whether some INFERNAL DEVICES characters will appear:
One must always be prepared for Herondales.

Response from me:

Q1: Peru! Honestly Peru is the biggest reason that interests me. Come on, what happened in Peru and why was he banned? I'd love to know. Maybe another love story?

Q2: Malec is the best ship on Earth besides Clary/Jace and Will/Tessa! Who wouldn't love Malec?

Q3: Magnus's wardrobe? This is a very interesting development. Perhaps some sexy warlock outfit? Can I borrow one?

Q4: Magnus is always great. But I'd like to know a different side of him. Maybe back when he was young?

Q5: Camille! I have to say Camille isn't exactly my favorite vampire. She ruined Alec and Magnus's relationship in City of Lost Souls. But I'd like to know if the Camille in France is different from the one in The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments. Maybe I'll get a clue of why Camille is so pissed with Alec.

Q6: Aww! Malec! No words can be drawn. This is just too awesome. Maybe the trip please?
(Anyone who's confused of the "trip", here's a reminder:
'"So have you heard from Alec and Magnus lately?" she asked. "Are the having a good time?"
"Sounds like it." Jace took his phone out of his pocket and handed it to her. "Alec keeps sending me annoying photos. Lots of captions like Wish you were here, except not really,"
"Well, you can't blame him. It's supposed to be a romantic vacation."
---Clary and Jace, City of Fallen Angels, Chapter 2 "Falling")

Q7: Wow. I know that already but it still sends shocks. Maybe because how romantic Alec and Magnus together affect my judgement. I'd like to see this point.

Q8: Peru! I need Peru!

Q9: The Herondales! You have no idea how I wanna see him with the Herondales. Maybe Will. Although I'm sure it will break my heart. Especially after I read Magnus's Vow (UGH... all those feels are killing me). And Maybe Jace (before Clary?), which can be interesting. Or maybe Stephen, which I think will be the most interesting of all if it happens. More about the age of The Circle? I love it!
