Will I Write A Review For A Book That I Didn't Finish?

Currently I'm reading Resist by Sarah Crossan. My current thoughts are... well they are slightly better than Breathe, but since Breathe isn't my thing to be honest, I don't know what to do with Resist sometimes. I was thinking that if I put down the book, will I be worth to write a review about the book?

That's the big question. And my answer is no, I won't write a review for a book that I didn't finish. When you don't read the whole book, you don't know the whole of the story, and you won't be able to make judgments that concerns the whole book. I think it's kind of improper to write a review on something that you don't understand fully. And here's my confession: It's obvious that you will be judge harshly when you review on something in which you don't the whole picture. And since I'm not one of those that sits well with harsh judgments (no offense, seriously), why write a review on something that you didn't even fully experience on?

But just because I don't write a review for a book that I didn't finish doesn't mean I'm against those out there who write something like this. I'm not a big fan of this idea but I'm not against it. I think he or she has his/her reasons when she write a review for an unfinished book. Maybe it was just too bad that she can't carry on and decided to tell others how bad it is. Or maybe it's just too good that she has to write a review to recommend this book, and some other reasons that I can't think of right now. It's not necessarily bad to write a review about something that you don't understand fully.

But there's one thing that I... strongly don't recommend, to put it mildly. And it's to write a book review on a book that you didn't even finish half of it. Believe me I've seen reviews like this before and I was like, "holy crap have you even read the book?" And not to mention those reviewers gets the details wrong.

So that's my opinion on reviews about a book that a reviewer didn't finish. Please be reminded that this post is only my opinion and I hold no offense against others.

Random Post: Stand-alone vs Series

Another random post. Yeah, because I have to concentrate on my revision so I can't write reviews for about a week or something. So another quick thoughtful post.

Feature: Stand-alone vs Series.

What I think about stand-alones:

Stand-alones are just a single book. I can't say I hold anything against a stand-alone because I really don't. But well, I just can't like a stand-alone most of the times. Partly because it lacks the excitement and cliffhangers that can hold you long enough to make things nice. Yeah, cliffhangers are frustrating creatures (creatures?). They tend to torture people, especially if you like the book very much. But... guess I'm one of those readers who like to torture myself.

Stand-alones are often very long. Well, often, because Cursed by JLA is totally NOT long. But sometimes, you need to create a proper world (whatever the world is) for the characters to live in. It's a rush to create a world like that because not only a world might not be set up properly, this can get really messy in some worse case scenario. So if you can't create a world in proper words' length, you need to stretch the book and... well, I can't say I like holding a big, heavy book on my hand every single time.

Stand-alone? Mostly nay, but there are exceptions.

***

Series:

Series, eh? This can get really complicated. Basically there are two kinds of series:

1. Real series (i.e. the story is set in the same world/dimension/whatever the hell that is AND the storyline is not separated)
2. "Not-real" series...? I don't know what it's called (i.e. the story is set in the same world yet there are different stories in different books. So different that they are actually separated.)

And a series usually has:

1. two books
2. three books aka trilogy
3. four books
4. five books
5. six books
6. seven books or more

* sometimes a prequel series or sequel series is included.

Yep, I can foresee the mess of the following words.

Okay, anyway. Do I prefer REAL series then NOT-REAL series?

Not really. It's complicated. They have their own good plots. The not-real series are often found in NA or adult novels, in which a world can be created very easily because... come on, you can just use the current world already. Real series, however, often involved paranormal stuff (I can't say this is the ONLY option because I know it's not. I'm just stating the majority...in my own perspective). It's complicated to say which is better because I have MORE experience with REAL series than the other one. Yet I know there are some good plots in the not-so-real series.

So what do I prefer? Well, I prefer BOTH. For very different reasons. For the "real" series, I love cliffhangers and sometimes how the story stretches. As for the not-so-real series, I love that they are set in the same world yet they are different story and sometimes we can find characters from a previous book and that's kind of fun.

And do I prefer two, three, four, five, six, or seven or more for a series?

Mostly not two book for a series, especially if the series is really fun to read. Like Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris. It's really hard for me to say goodbye to the series and the characters because I love the world so much. There's another case though, like Breathe. Yeah, I plan on reading Resist, the second and FINAL book of Breathe series. But let's just say I'm not into Breathe series.

Three... well, I hold nothing against trilogies. Although I'm getting tired of trilogies lately because it seems like every single new announced series are trilogies and... I'm a little sick of it. But trust me when I say I think three is a good number.

Four is a good number (not just because it's one of my book-boyfriends XD). It's good to have four books because more excitement will be provided if the author is good.

Five is an odd number. I mean it's a really ODD number because writing a series of five is kind of unimaginable to me in more ways than one. But again, there are two that I really like which is Lux and Covenant series by JLA. So no, nothing against them.

Six, eh? Six is a tricky number as well, because many things can go wrong in the middle of a series of six. Like The Immortals by Alyson Noel. Things go horribly wrong in Shadowland and Dark Flame to me. I can barely bring myself to read the rest of the series. But then there are good ones like The Mortal Instruments (actually it's two trilogies rolled into one in one way). And Gone series that I'm reading now. You have no idea how much I love Gone series.

Seven or more? Seven is a hard enough achievement because again, things can go wrong in so many ways in the middle of a series. Luckily Soul Screamers (yeah, it's a series of seven technically) does not disappoint me. But House of Night? A twelve book series? That's way too much. I'm practically numb about reading this series and I'm not sure I can make myself to read Revealed anymore. So mostly nay for seven or more in one series.

What do I prefer:

Two: Nay, because it's too short especially if the story is cool

Three: Despite getting tired of trilogies lately, I still love reading them

Four: Perfect number if the series is good

Five: Odd but good enough

Six: Mostly yay.

Seven or more: Mostly nay but there are exceptions.

What do I prefer? Stand-alones or Series?

Series. Because I like to be tortured by teasers and cliffhangers?

Random Post: Flower Etymology

Perhaps you're taken aback by the title. It's a blog about books, not about flowers. But let's just say that you can guess what might happen in a book with a flower on the cover (or let's just say my imagination and geekiness know no limits XD).

My target is Covenant series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. Yep, you're familiar with the shimmery beautiful flowers on the cover. This time I won't be *cough *cough researching *cough on all the books. Just three of them. Half-Blood, Pure and Sentinel (Actually, I find out that the flower on Apollyon's cover is Lily. But damn, that's a little too hard to talk about. Deity, on the other hand... well, I can't  make out what flower that is. Same for Elixir and Daimon).

Half-Blood:

Flower on the cover: Hibiscus

Meaning:

1. It represents a sunny summer (uh, I can't see any direct relations between a sunny summer and what happened in Half-Blood )

2. It means "delicate beauty" among Europeans (Okay. The book is called Half-Blood. I'm sure they're beautiful at some point. But delicate? I can't see halfs as DELICATE. Unless you're telling me this is about the whole plot itself. Then I'm speechless)

3. It means "royalty" (i.e. great honor, respect and warm welcome) in historical tradition (Honor? Perhaps so. Respect? Probably not. Warm welcome for Alex? Not so much, huh?)

4. It means "welcome and hospitality" in Japanese (That sounds a little weird to me. But who knows?)

5. It means "wealth and fame" in China on one hand (I'm sure the pures are more wealthy and famous...)

6. It also represents a very special appeal of young female virgin in China on the other hand (If you read the whole series, you can say halfs are... well, virgins in one way. That is a whole lot of weird though)

7. It means "immortality" in Korean. In a wedding. They use Hibiscus to represent the immortality of love (Ah, I like this one. Half-Blood is the start of... you know, every romance involved in the whole series)

***
Pure:

Flower on the cover: Rose (Don't be so excited just yet)

Color of roses and their meaning (I'm not going to list all of them because the list is simply too long):

1. Red: love, beauty, courage and respect, romantic love, congratulations, "I love you, "job well done", sincere love, respect, courage & passion (Basically it means love in most situations. But wait, the flower is not red)

2. White: purity, innocence, silence, secrecy, reverence, humility, youthfulness, "I am worthy of you", heavenly (Well, it's kind of white. Reverence, humility is fitting. I mean, the halfs have to respect the pures completely. Heavenly... well, maybe godly will do :D)

3. Yellow: joy, gladness, friendship, delight, promise of a new beginning, welcome back, remember me,  jealousy,
"I care" (Jealousy, huh? Interesting... And promise of a new beginning? Maybe Alex (from Delirium) should give one to Lena. But hey, the flower on the book is not yellow either)

Now on to the big bad question: What is the meaning of a blue rose?

(Reminder: there's no natural absolute blue roses in nature)

Blue: The unattainable, the impossible

See that? Unattainable. Impossible. That certainly fits into the situation of Aiden (and all the other pures). The one being that is unattainable to halfs/Apollyons like Alex. Sad. But true.

***

Sentinel:

 (Warning: Predictions are involved)

Flower on the cover: Tulip (Oh. My. Gods)

Meaning:

1. Red: Basically it's a declaration of true love (Aww, you know what that means...)

2. Yellow: It means "there's sunshine in your smile" and cheerful thoughts (Cheerful thoughts appeals to me. But it's not yellow. But hey, it's not red either. Although that wouldn't be much of a problem...)

3. Cream colored: It means "I will love you forever" (Another swooning. You know what that means. And the color is dangerously close to the color of the flower on the cover. Yeah, I know it's gray/silver. But damn)

4. White: It symbolizes heaven, newness and purity (There are things tickling in my mind but I can't make out what they are. I can only tell you that there are good stuff and bad stuff)

What I gain:

Well, not just the cover itself. The blurb also helped. Here's a sentence from the blurb:

"Alex must face a terrible choice between destruction of everything she loves and her own destruction. "

Well, we know for certain Alex would rather choose her own destruction than the other way around...

And there's a sentence from a teaser from Sentinel:

1. "And he would wait forever for me, just as I would wait forever and a day for him."

Here's what I gain from the cover, the blurb and the teasers

1. Sacrifices has to be made. Huge, irreversible choices. (From the blurb. That's obvious)
2. Tulip means "perfect love" in general (From the cover)
3. It's gray/silver (From the cover)
4. It's definitely Alex saying the second teaser (Way to state the obvious. But that means a lot)

What I think about these facts:

The tulip is gray/silver. You know what that means. Aiden for sure. And tulip means "perfect love" in general. That we can confirm. The closest color are cream color and white. White tulips symbolize heaven, newness and purity. It's a good thing... in most ways. Cream colored tulips means "I will love you forever". Well... that depends on what you think.

On the other hand, Alex saying that a he (I think he's Aiden) would wait forever for her. That terrifies me a little because... a suicide mission might be well involved (Actually, it's already involved).

In general, what I think is:

Either Sentinel is going to end really heavenly (HEA ending), or it's going to end really tragically.

Reasons:

1. Heavenly: Heaven. Newness. Perfect love. Eternal love. It can't get more obvious

2. Tragically: The whole perfect love and eternal love thing can be twisted into a tragic love loss kind of stuff. And the teaser bugs me. A LOT.

(Ugh, just thinking about a possibility of a tragedy makes my head explode. It's like the wait for Clockwork Princess all over again. Except things are more certain... and uncertain at the same time. That's really unsettling.)

Okay, time to snap back to reality and... go for my textbooks. *Sigh

Random Post: YA Crush Tourney 3.0 Nomination Begins

Yep, the nomination begins, and so is the heart-break and teeth-clenching, toes-curling, jaw-tightening.

Check it out here:

http://ya-sisterhood.blogspot.hk/2013/05/ya-crush-tournament-nominations-begin.html

According to YA Sisterhood, this time is quite different, and truth to be told, I'm quite pissed. Reason:

1) Four categories? Really? I mean, that's a little troublesome. But compare to the next problem, this is minor.

2) One character from ONE author ONLY!? I totally understand that the host don't want any books/characters/series/whatever dominating the whole competition *particularly Cassie's. Yeah, I totally get it.* But damn, that pisses me off so much when I want to nominate all my crushes from TMI, TID (Will, Jem, Alec, Simon, Magnus, Jordan, Gideon, Gabriel). Jeez.

Okay, back to the whole nomination thing. Here's who I nominate:

Debut:

1. Perry from Under The Never Sky (Oh, I'm so gonna vote for him :) )
2. Kaidan from Sweet Evil (Yep, after Sweet Peril, I'm totally swooning)

Who I'm supposed to nominate in the Debut category but actually didn't:
1. Prince Kai from Cinder (Because I'm still a little pissed at him, sorry)
2. Jack from Everneath (Just not that in love with him)
3. Maxon/Aspen from The Selection (Sorry, but they're practically the last two people I will nominate)

***

Speculative:

1. Will from The Infernal Devices (I'm telling you if he doesn't win this time I will zap someone)
2. Four from Divergent (definitely!)
3. Magnus from The Mortal Instruments/The Infernal Devices (hard not to like the sexy, sexy warlock :D)
4. Tucker from Unearthly (yep)
5. Tod from Soul Screamers (it's official. I love that guy/reaper)
6. Day from Legend (One bad-ass prodigious criminal XD)

Yeah they only allow 6 nominations per category. I want to cry for not being able to fill in more of my crushes T_T

Who I want to nominate in the Speculative category but actually didn't:

1. Alex from Delirium (surprising, right? Two reasons. 1) I'm torn between him and Julian 2) I'm still a little piss at him)
2. Adam from Shatter Me (I'm not sure I really want to nominate him)
3. Zeke from Blood of Eden (not enough space, sorry)
4. Ash from The Iron Fey (again, not enough space)
5. Jem, Simon, Alec, Gideon, Gabriel from TMI/TID (again, not enough space)

***

Indie:

1. Daemon from Obsidian (Oh, definitely.)
2. Aiden from Half-Blood (Another definitely :D)

(Sorry, I don't know much about small publishers)

***

What are you waiting for? Go nominate your crushes!

Random Post: Reading Slump and Withdrawls

I think a little post might help my killer headache (yeah, I have migraine). I still haven't finished reading The 5th Wave yet, and probably my review won't be until tomorrow or even Sunday. So, random post is totally fine with me... now.

Reading Slump

How I define it: Basically I think that's a stage where you have no interest in any new releases, especially after 1) an awesome book release (aka a kind of withdrawl) 2) a stage of frantic obsessive book nerd or before huge exams (my case now)

2013 Reading Slump: It's the second time I have a reading-slump problem in this year (yeah I'm having this problem right now). I don't have this problem in 2012. *Sigh

My reasons:

1) April have many new releases, but not all of them are good.
2) May new releases are especially frustrating (I don't know why).
3) June is the big boss month 'cuz I have a really important exam to attend. Which means... stress.

Books in 2013 that triggers my reading-slump problem:

1. Days of Blood and Starlight (Don't hit me, but I just can't get lost in the book)
2. Breathe (A frustrating read)
3. Taken (You totally know what I mean)
4. Rebel Heart (Again, can't get into the book)
5. Breaking Point (Same reason with 1 and 4)

***

Withdrawls

How I define it: You keep thinking about it, you can't stop yourself from reading the book again and again, you are totally distracted by it, you can't concentrate, blah and blah.

2013 Withdrawls: Many, many withdrawls. Just like 2012. Damn.

My reasons: Is there even a reason for this?

Books in 2013 that I had/still have withdrawls:

P = Have allready gotten past the problem
S = Still having the problem
G = Getting past it

1. Through The Ever Night (Yep, I can't wait for Into The Still Blue) [P]
2. Boundless [P]
3. Requiem [P]
4. Prodigy (Yeah, THE ending. Ugh.) [G]
5. Wait For You (I. Love. It.) [S]
6. The Eternity Cure (Ah, the ending!) [G]
7. Clockwork Princess (I believe I can never get past withdrawl) [S]
8. With All My Soul [G]
9. Apollyon (Cliffhanger ending) [S]

***

As my life's getting busier and busier in the oncoming few years, I guess my reading-slump problem will only get worse (I don't have much time to read). Withdrawls, on the other hand, are very much depended on the situation. I guess I will never get over some books *cough *cough Cassie's novels and *cough JLA's novels *cough *cough.

Yeah, random posts are pretty random... for me.

Random Stuff: CoFA, CoLS, CoHF and The Dark Artifices movies?

It's like a Thoughtful Thursday post or one of my Surreal Sundays. But I can't wait for Sunday and I missed Thursday. And it IS a random stuff, in a way.

So, City of Bones will hit the theaters in 4 months, and The Infernal Devices has been optioned as a movie adaptation (which, by the way, is the BEST NEWS EVER!!! I can't wait to see more Will and Jem and Tessa. I miss them so much). It seems like Cassie's novel will be a franchise for a long, long time.

And here's comes the fun part: Will the second cycle of TMI, which is Fallen Angels, Lost Souls and Heavenly Fire, be a movie as well?

Okay, it's already known that there will be City of Ashes and City of Glass movie if CoB is successful. But that doesn't include the second cycle of the story, especially when the second cycle is so different from the first cycle. That's a disappointment that they are not mentioned.

Personally, I think that will be a good thing that the second cycle will be made into movies as well. I love The Mortal Instruments, and on some level the second cycle is even better than the first (although I know that some of you guys out there don't think so...). But there's one important reason. I mean, how about you bringing all those feels on SCREEN? (Spoiler!) The second cycle is closely related (at least I think the relationship is close) to The Infernal Devices. And with TID being optioned as a movie adaptation as well, why not the second cycle of TMI? (End of Spoiler)

But ironically, some part of me DON'T want them to be movies. One big reason is that I'm so scared that they will mess them up when CoFA and CoLS are so sophisticated. Another reason is... the cast. If there's truly a CoFA movie, the cast will be... well, you know what I mean.

Another fun part: Will Lady Midnight, Prince of Shadows and The Queen of Air and Darkness be movies as well?

* I know that's a tad bit too early to talk about The Dark Artifices movies now. But I just wanna talk about it for whatever reason that I can't really see.

Lady Midnight is not out yet, so it's early to judge if they are worth making into movies or not. But I think City of Bones will be a franchise, and so will CoA, CoG and The Infernal Devices movies. It's no wonder that The Dark Artifices might be optioned as a movie adaptation as well. But then, I don't know how Lady Midnight will turn out, so guess we'll just wait and see. But personally, if TDA is awesome, I will definitely want to see Emma Carstairs kicks some demon butt on screen.

(And please don't ask me if I want a TLH movie or not because it's FAR TOO EARLY. At least TDA is something in the foreseeing future. XD)

Do you guys want The Infernal Devices movies? Or are you just anticipating for TMI movies? Judging the awesomeness of TID, I think I'm already seeing the movie title THE INFERNAL DEVICES: CLOCKWORK ANGEL.

(In fact, I want TID movie even more than TMI movie...)
