The Death Code by Lindsay Cummings: Review

Synopsis:

With short, fast-paced, alternating point-of-view chapters, The Death Code starts several weeks after The Murder Complex ended. Zephyr keeps the secret about Meadow close—that if she dies, The Murder Complex will be destroyed, too. Meadow, desperate to find her brother, father, and little sister, is determined to fearlessly fight to the end, even if it means sacrificing herself and her friends, new and old. The Death Code introduces a memorable cast of secondary characters and delivers a vivid and scary thrill ride read.

"You just have to be strong enough, fearless enough, to open your eyes and really look."

The Murder Complex was one of my favorite books last year. Fast paced and brutal, it was one hell of a ride. Unfortunately, the same thing can't be said to The Death Code. In fact, after a year and a half (because I read the ARC of TMC six months before its release) of waiting, the book just can't live up to my expectations. Of course, The Death Code is filled with action, survival and fighting by default, but this time, there are some things that have gone, um, somewhat wrong that diminishes the awesomeness of the whole thing.

Meadow Woodson is one of those things. This is the part that infuriates me the most, because I. Love. Meadow. She's a force of nature, always fighting for survival, always putting her loved ones before anything else, always logical and cunning and smart. While she's still some of those traits, the others have gone into smoke. I understand why that happened. I won't give any spoilers here, but after that ambush at the end of TMC, you can expect a lot of pain, both physically and emotionally, for Meadow. Is it enough to break someone's mental stability? Yes. But is it so drastic that it can make someone loses his or her perspective on what's right and wrong? Is it so extreme that it completely changes one's judgement towards another person? I don't think so. Meadow changes so much in personality that it's almost ridiculous, and she's a shell of her former self in this book. I miss the Meadow in TMC terribly and the one in The Death Code just makes me want to hit her.

We also gain a lot of valuable insight in the book. The history of The Murder Complex, and clandestine experiments. It has enriched the background of the story greatly. The world in TMC is anything but simple, and I appreciate the richness. But good as it might be, it also has its downside, because while the extra information help, it doesn't really change the ultimate goal of the whole series - taking down The Murder Complex and be done with it. I'm not saying that a straightforward goal is a bad thing, but some of the extra information seems redundant when it does absolutely nothing to change the course of the story. However, the extra info does seem to help the book live up to its sci-fi-dystopian-YA-thriller-hybrid, so it isn't a big problem.

The review won't be complete without talking about the other protagonist - Zephyr. He's virtually the same as in TMC, if not a little bit more cautious. He's still kind of a baby, yeah. But his loyalty and protectiveness really shines in The Death Code. I guess the reason is that Meadow was doing most of the protecting in the previous book, and we were unable to see his true personality. He's also a little bit more radical, which is also fine by me, because he was conservative in The Murder Complex. His loyalty is a constant in the book, and I respect this guy for it. However, despite all his potential, he still doesn't make an imprint in my mind. He's one of the few good things in The Death Code though, and I cherish it.

The Death Code, in terms of action and brutality, is still more than decent. But the sort-of unnecessary emotional wringer that I have to go through (yes, me, because I'm thoroughly annoyed by Meadow) tarnishes the experience. It's not a sequel that I'm completely satisfied with.

The Fear Trials: Review

Synopsis:

Meadow Woodson has been trained to survive. This is a prequel to The Murder Complex, by Lindsay Cummings, and it is set in a blood-soaked world where the murder rate is higher than the birth rate. For fans of Moira Young's Dust Lands series, La Femme Nikita, and the movie Hanna.

Meadow Woodson's father calls it The Fear Trials, and it is a rite of passage in their family. Meadow is up against her brother Koi. The Fear Trials will both harden her and make her brave. If Meadow wins, she will get a weapon of her own and the right to leave the Woodsons' houseboat without her father or mother at her side. Set in the violent, complex, and mysterious world of The Murder Complex, and introducing Meadow Woodson—a teenage girl trained to survive no matter what the cost—and her family, who are together for the last time on their houseboat in the Florida Everglades.

***

The Fear Trials is set before TMC, which is the first book I've read this year, and is one of my favorites. This book centers on Meadow, which is the only hope of the family that can get one more ration. It's not as bloody as TMC, but it's still brutal. Meadow has to go through a series of trials that can result in her partial freedom. We get a good insight of how Meadow comes to be such a brave and cautious girl in The Murder Complex. We also get some glimpses about a certain character that is behind the whole plot line in TMC.

I don't think it's necessary to read The Fear Trials, but it's an exciting and heart-racing story nonetheless. However, what I actually want to read about is the prequel of The Fear Trials, which can be about a complete story of the foundation of the MC. I will certainly read that book.

The Murder Complex (ARC): Review

Synopsis:

An action-packed, blood-soaked, futuristic debut thriller set in a world where the murder rate is higher than the birthrate. For fans of Moira Young’s Dust Lands series, La Femme Nikita, and the movie Hanna.

Meadow Woodson, a fifteen-year-old girl who has been trained by her father to fight, to kill, and to survive in any situation, lives with her family on a houseboat in Florida. The state is controlled by The Murder Complex, an organization that tracks the population with precision.

The plot starts to thicken when Meadow meets Zephyr James, who is—although he doesn’t know it—one of the MC’s programmed assassins. Is their meeting a coincidence? Destiny? Or part of a terrifying strategy? And will Zephyr keep Meadow from discovering the haunting truth about her family?

Action-packed, blood-soaked, and chilling, this is a dark and compelling debut novel by Lindsay Cummings.

"Count to three. Relax your mind. Now survive."

Oh this gotta be one of the best debut novels here. Back in 2013 I thought The Murder Complex might be good, and I was right! Action-packed and blood-soaked aren't even enough to describe the book. It's practically crazy and extremely brutal. The synopsis is right. It IS compelling. I'm so glad I read it.

Off to a thrilling start, which is something rarely seen in debut novels nowadays (I'm sorry but this is the truth). Meadow is trained to survive by her father and she needs to survive in order to help taking care of the whole family. But she doesn't know the real reason behind all the training. Zephyr is a Ward --- a nobody --- except he always find himself killing people he doesn't want to kill. And all that leads something hidden. Something brutal. The Murder Complex. In order to take it down, they've to go through a series of obstacles and face the consequences when the MC is destroyed.

Since it's a debut novel, I figure I have to go through the basics first. Character, plot, all the stuff. I especially love Meadow. She's very respectable. Fierce, determined, brave, logical and quite self-sacrificing. It's hard not to like this girl, especially when she can fight like a badass. Zephyr is her opposite in a way. Not that I don't like him. In fact he's soft and really cute. He wants to do the right thing for himself, people around him and Meadow. But... well, like Meadow said, sometimes (though not often), he's being a baby about stressful situations. I can feel that he will become more mature in the following books. But Zephyr is good enough in this book. Talan doesn't show up in The Murder Complex a lot of times, which is kind of a damn shame, because I really like her. Why? Well here it is: (Beware little spoilers)

I slide her rations through the slot but she doesn't take them. "Don't even think about trying to take him from me, Skinny," she says. "Trust me, you're not his type." -- Meadow and Talan

"She'll come around." Talan says to me. She is gnawing on her rations like a wild dog. "I gave her good reason to want you."
"What are you talking about? What did you say to her?"
Talan shrugs, and kicks and old can across the street. It disappears in an instant, caught up in the current of shuffling feet. "I made her think you weren't free. Every girl wants what she can't have." -- Zephyr and Talan

Bravo, Talan. Bravo. Now you get it.

Well, here comes the plot. And it's nothing short of amazing and ferocious. It's good enough with a nice, bloody start and all. But as the plot develops, it just gets better and better. The foundation of the MC, the secret of Zephyr that he doesn't even aware of, the link between the MC and Meadow... the links between characters are fascinating. And it ends with a breath-taking cliffhanger, which leaves me wanting for more. Now I regret reading this book in January when it'll not be released until June, because now I have to wait 5 more months than I supposed to for the next book! The wait is excruciating! The book is just so good it's practically un-put-down-able. Trust me, this is not something I say for every book.

The Murder Complex is an awesome debut about a world where no one is safe and can die in an instant on the streets without even remotely understanding why. It's the perfect book about survival, danger and choice. I have a feeling the series is just going to get better and better.
