Top Ten YA Novels 2014 #3: City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare

I can't believe I'm putting City of Heavenly Fire (I mean, come on. It's the freaking last book of The Mortal Instruments series, and I love it with all my heart) at the third place. Seriously. It's such a good book. I guess the top two is just too good to be true.

Yes the third place goes to City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare.

Top 3 reasons why I like it:

1) The feels, man. THE FEELS! (Spoiler Alert!)

This should occupy the slots of the top 3 reasons. You have no idea how this book wrecked me. Or maybe you did, when you read my ramblings in the original review. I thought Clockwork Princess has pushed me over the edge of sanity. It has. But City of Heavenly Fire... let's just say I can't recover for, like, ever. The lines of good and evil have blurred, and that scene... with Sebastian/Jonathan... GOD! WHY! HE'S A VICTIM! THE REAL HIM DESERVES TO LIVE (okay, he has done a lot of bad things and that's probably the understatement of the year, but I still mourn for him like crazy)! I just can't get over it. Cassie also include a lot of TID stuff in the book (without spoiling people, of course), which just makes the feels worse. Oh how I miss Will and Jem and Tessa (even though two of them appeared in the book). The bittersweet feeling will never go away entirely.

And I might have broken down a little while I was typing the above words.

2) Cassie's clever writing

Speaking of not spoiling anyone... how is that even possible! I don't know if I'm just too sensitive or if Cassie is being subtle enough to mention the details that only the ones who have read The Infernal Devices can fully get it. It's probably the latter. Wow, I struggle not to spill out plots in my short reviews, and Cassie is putting all the fine details together without spoiling anyone like breathing air. (Well, maybe not breathing air. I'm sure this takes a lot of work. But seriously, she's just brilliant like that) I pay my utter respect to Cassie. It's just insane.

3) I can't think of anything when the feels is the whole world.

Yep. They are just a strong force that I can't resist. Cassie's writing is like the ultimate sustenance and the ultimate poison of the lovers. Just... I can't even talk anymore!

Why I recommend this book or series:

Seriously?! Do you need me to recommend it to you? How about thousands (probably millions, I don't know. I suck at counting) of fans presenting the series to you? It's just too good to be true. 

And it's poetic and utterly beautiful.

And I can't believe it's over.

Do I like the cover?

It's one of the most beautiful covers. I remember spending a lot of time analyzing the cover, trying to figure out the meaning behind it. It's a good memory. I don't have that time anymore.

Top 3 favorite scenes:

1) When Jace meets Jem (I'm hoping this is not spoiling anyone who hasn't read TID)

It brings back a lot of memories of Will and Jem. I'm going to cry in a corner now.

2) DSES

You can't not like the DS_S scene. (My favorite is the DSDS scene)

3) Pretty much when Alec and Magnus get together (and I mean together, together)

They are the couple who everyone ships. You can't deny the sweetness.

I'm not sure if it's a review or not. So no ratings this time, though I rate it 5 out of 5 on Goodreads.

Since there will be a chance I go crazy on this post, for those who want to see something sane, I will talk about the sane... well, saner things first. 

And there will might be spoilers. I will highlight the spoilers white so it will not be completely exposed. This is for those who don't want to be... um, directly spoiled.

Sane stuff first:

1) Okay the ending is not what I'm expecting.

2) *Spoilers* There will be some stuff about The Infernal Devices, and I'm very happy and sad and want to crawl into a corner and cry. (Details please see the, um, the insane part of the review)

3) I love that there are things about Emma Carstairs and the Blackthorns. Especially Emma. She's just badass. She's like an adult and she is twelve. She's also kick-ass in Cortana. And her kind-of-celeb-crush on Jace is just very cute. She's also a rule breaker in an amazing way. I can't wait to see the seventeen-year-old Emma in The Dark Artifices. 

4) And the Blackthorns! I totally think you will like Julian. I love the twins as well. And Helen. I can't believe I like Mark as well because I can't imagine myself doing that. But yes, I have a feeling the Blackthorns are heart-breakers.

5) Sebastian is really scary in CoHF, by the way.

6) Alec kicks ass in CoHF. I can't begin to describe how awesome this is. Just saying

7) The Alec and Jace being parabatai is awesome thing is in full swing! OMG I can't get enough of them together. Somebody needs to bring them together again because I need to see more parabatai goodness.

Insane stuff (probably contain a lot of spoilers):

1) There's Clace and OH MY GOD THEY FINALLY HAPPEN I CAN'T BELIEVE IT THIS IS JUST HOT AND AWESOME AND I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE HOW FIERY THIS IS I LOVE IT OH MY GOD THEY ARE SO SWEET TOGETHER THIS IS JUST I CAN'T EVEN

2) And then there's Sizzy. Christ, they're so heart-wrenching. I can't believe they're the one that I cry most over. They're so sweet and cute together I can't even say how blissful I am to see them FINALLY! together! *Spoilers* I scream and scream and cry and crawl and hit my pillow repeatedly with my fists when Simon sacrifices his memories to save his friends and he becomes mortal. But then he came around again and everything will be okay again and I can't help thinking about Isabelle and she's just so devoted to Simon this is the best couple since Malec oh my god I need to see more of them I can't get enough I just need to see more of them together again *ugly sobs and laughs*

3) And MALEC *Spoiler* THEY FINALLY GET TOGETHER AGAIN AND THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER THEY ARE FINALLY HAPPY AND OH THE BITTERSWEETNESS BETWEEN THEM THIS IS TOO MUCH I LOVE THEM SO MUCH I CAN'T EVEN I CAN'T I CAN'T I CAN'T I NEED TO SEE THEM TOGETHER AGAIN THIS IS THE BEST COUPLE EVER I AM LAUGHING AND SOBBING RIGHT NOW Ahem, sorry for breaking down. 

4) And then there's Jonathan/Sebastian *Spoiler* And he's dead. This is probably not a spoiler at all because we're all expecting it. But this is still heartbreaking. *Spoiler* In fact this is the most heart-breaking out of all deaths. Totally not expecting that. I actually cried over it a lot. Because *Spoiler* WE GET TO SEE THE REAL JONATHAN WITH THE GREEN EYES THE GREEN EYES OF THE FAIRCHILD OF CLARY AND THE GOODNESS IN HIM AND THIS IS JUST TOO MUCH WHY CAN'T HE LIVE AT LEAST JUST FOR ONE DAY HE DOESN'T LIVE A LONG ENOUGH LIFE I WANT TO KNOW THE REAL JONATHAN WHY CAN'T YOU GIVE HIM A CHANCE CASSIE WHY CAN'T YOU WHY WHY WHY WHY

5) And then those TID references. Yes. There are a lot. We get to see Tessa and Jem Zachariah. *Spoiler* And there are some reference about Will, and James Herondale and Lucie Herondale and I finally figure out the full name of Emma Carstairs. This is another reason why my eyes are puffy because of all the crying. I am still having withdrawals with Clockwork Princess and those references makes me think of the TID characters and their glory and bittersweet days and how they make me cry and laugh in the previous days. Those references kill me. There's no way I can get over it. THERE IS JUST NO WAY. Someone help me. I need help from all the heart-break.

Sorry for including all the spoilers and make the insane part practically unreadable for those who don't want spoilers. But I need to get this out of my system or my mind will be beyond repair.

P.S. As much as I love this series, I can't write a series recap because 1) there are simply too much going on and it involves (actually) 4 series and 2) I can't write the recap without going nuts and I think I have enough craziness to last for 6 months or so.

TBR #13: May 2014

Possibly my least favorite month of the year. But this year it's different. I've got a lot of really good sequels of really good series.

1. After The End (After The End #1) by Amy Plum

One of the craziest day in my life. Yeah, we got a ton from Cassie about City of Heavenly Fire. And I assure you, some of them are not going to be pretty.

First, the big thing, which is the placeholder of City of Heavenly Fire!!!

First reaction: By the Angel it's beautiful! Even without the characters on the cover the fire and the smoke is gorgeous!

Second reaction: Who Will Survive? WHAT?

Third reaction: Did you really just say that out loud?!

Fourth reaction:... well you know the rest.

Yeah, the placeholder is enough to kill me.

And then the tweets of teasers about City of Heavenly Fire. Not only will I comment on them, some of the comments are either going to be crazy or not pretty. Nope, not at all.

NO. I swear to the Angel if the couple's Malec I will totally flip out. (Not to mention she says STAY separated...)

(Oh and do you realize that almost no one says CLARY will die? I mean, she's the main character and it's basically her story but that doesn't mean she can't die...)

And then another flaming war begins: who will save who, and all the heartbreak... I can't take it anymore.

Figures. I wonder if it will be even more heartbreaking then the one in Clockwork Princess... I'm not sure my mind can process this anymore after CP2.

I'm not sure if it's supposed to be some form of reassurance. At least, I don't get the warmth from it.

I know it will make the book so much better, but it's going to be so much harder to lose those characters.

Haha that's hilarious! Aww, Isabelle saying Brother Zachariah aka Jem hot? Totally the best scene so far (And hey, he's always hot no matter what. So get over it, Iz XD). I wonder when this take place. Did Isabelle *accidentally* see Brother Zachariah's face or... is he, you know, cured so he's a normal Shadowhunter (well, as normal as he can be)? I can foresee humor and heart-wrenching involved. I wonder if Tessa's there although CoHF took place in 2007 and not 2008...


Well, we'll see about that, right?

Beware, because you're gonna zap something. I, for one, really wants to kick some groin and smash some brains.

    His eyes shone when he looked at her, green as spring grass.

    He has always had green eyes, said the voice in her head. People often marvel at how much alike you are, he and your mother and yourself. His name is Jonathan and he is your brother; he has always protected you.

No. Way. In. Hell. Clary, being BRAINWASHED by Sebastian/Jonathan? Yeah, I kind of see danger comes from Clary, but damn, not THIS, okay? First is Jace being bounded by Sebastian, and now Clary being brainwashed?

And if there's no "Somewhere in the back of Clary's mind" thing, I really would've expect Sebastian/Jonathan go divine. Guess that won't happen. Ugh, somebody just give me City of Heavenly Fire now!

(I wonder what Jace is doing, because I have a feeling either Clary is being kidnapped AND brainwashed, or just brainwashed so Jace has to save her, blah, blah, blah.)

City of Heavenly Fire... with The Dark Artifices characters! And quite confusing as well...

A moment later, Helen had returned; she was walking slowly now, and carefully, her hand on the back of a thin boy with a mop of wavy brown hair. He couldn’t have been older than twelve, and Clary recognized him immediately. Helen, her hand firmly clamped around the wrist of a younger boy whose hands were covered with blue wax. He must have been playing with the tapers in the huge candelabras that decorated the sides of the nave. He looked about twelve, with an impish grin and the same wavy, bitter-chocolate hair as his sister.

Jules, Helen had called him. Her little brother.

The impish grin was gone now. He looked tired and dirty and frightened. Skinny wrists stuck out of the cuffs of a white mourning jacket whose sleeves were too short for him. In his arms he was carrying a little boy, probably not more than two years old, with the same wavy brown hair that he had; it seemed to be a family trait. The rest of his family wore the same borrowed mourning clothes: following Julian was a brunette girl about ten, her hand firmly clasped in the hold of a boy the same age: the boy had a sheet of tangled black hair that nearly obscured his face. Fraternal twins, Clary guessed. After them came a girl who might have been eight or nine, her face round and very pale between brown braids. 

The misery on their faces cut ay Clary’s heart. She thought of her power with runes, wishing that she could create one that would soften the blow of loss. Mourning runes existed, but only to honor the dead, in the same way that love runes existed, like wedding rings, to symbolize the bond of love. You couldn’t make someone love you with a rune, and you couldn’t assuage grief with it, either. So much magic, Clary thought, and nothing to mend a broken heart.

“Julian Blackthorn,” said Jia Penhallow, and her voice was gentle. “Step forward, please.”

Julian swallowed and handed the little boy he was holding over to his sister. He stepped forward, his eyes darting around the room. He was clearly scouring the crowd for someone. His shoulders had just begun to slump when another figure darted out onto the stage. A girl, also about twelve, with a tangle of blond hair that hung down around her shoulders: she wore jeans and a t-shirt that didn’t quite fit, and her head was down, as if she couldn’t bear so many people looking at her. It was clear that she didn’t want to be there — on the stage or perhaps even in Idris — but the moment he saw her, Julian seemed to relax. The terrified look vanished from his expression as she moved to stand next to him, her face ducked down and away from the crowd.

“Julian,” said Jia, in the same gentle voice, “would you do something for us? Would you take up the Mortal Sword?”

Oh my god. Helen, Jules, Livvy and Ty are there (and maybe also Silla). Jules is in a MOURNING jacket. I have a feeling that his parents are dead. And this might be AFTER the war. But what does Jia (by the way, except knowing her as a Penhallow, who the hell is she?) mean by taking up the Mortal Sword? My guess is Jules taking up his duty as a Shadowhunter. That makes sense to me because normally one starts training at Jules' age.

And Emma... Emma is also there too. She's not that badass girl that I really wanna see (but then, she's only twelve). I'm really curious about what happens to her parents at that stage. Seems like something bad also happens to her.

Jeez, you're just making me more impatient, Cassie. When is March 2014 'cuz I need it NOW.
