Chasing Justice: Review

Synopsis:

Piper Anderson has been given a fresh start in the picturesque town of Edenville, North Carolina. But her plans of settling into a normal life are derailed when she witnesses a prominent judge in her community committing a violent assault. Running from her own past and fueled by a passion to make the judge answer for his crimes, Piper is forced to decide if she’ll play by the rules or achieve justice in her own way.
Complicating things further, Piper finds herself fighting a powerful attraction to rookie cop, Bobby Wright. Although she’s increasingly enamored with Bobby, his staunch belief in the justice system is in stark contrast to her own. She may not share his opinions about the effectiveness of the law, but she certainly can’t deny how safe she feels when she’s in his arms or how every kiss leaves her desperate for more.
For Piper, the idea of finally living an ordinary life with a man to love is tempting. However, fate keeps placing the judge, quite literally, in her path. Will she decide the only way to win is to be as wicked as the judge, but with righteous intentions? And more importantly, will Bobby choose to let her go, or follow her as she crosses the line and takes justice into her own hands?

"The only way to get anything done is to be just as wicked, but with righteous intentions."

Chasing Justice is about a girl who called herself Piper. She has witness something corrupted in the legal system. And she's determined to make the guy (aka the judge) pay for it. But she can't do it just by calling the police and have him arrested. She has to win in a wicked sort of way.

There are some parts that I enjoy and some parts that I, well, do not. Let's talk about the good things first. I like the concept of judging the judge. Because I always wonder that myself. The judges are supposed to be good. Yet I can't help but think there might be some bad eggs out there. This story is basically centered on it. Which suits my curiosity fine. Piper is a nice girl too. Yes, she might play wicked and can sometimes be very hard to get along, but she's a good one. And, well, she doesn't whine or anything. She's stronger than I ever expected. Thumbs up for her.

But there are some problems with the book. Some are actually because of it and some are not. The book starts up a little too slow, which bores me a tad bit. Without the dystopian or paranormal elements that YA (which is my favorite genre) has, I have to admit it's a little hard to carry on at first. Luckily it smooths out pretty quickly. The ending is pretty predictable, to be honest. It's acceptable, but still, predictable. And then the whole problem-that-is-not-because-of-the book thing. I'm not an expert on contemporary. I don't care if it's YA, NA or adult contemporary, I'm not familiar with it. I can find ways to enjoy a YA dystopian or fantasy, but I can't find a suitable one to enjoy a contemporary. It's not the book's fault. I just find myself unable to enjoy it as much as I thought I would.

Chasing Justice is a nice book to start with. But... well, I guess I'm more of a dystopian/fantasy fan than a contemporary fan. I'm still thinking about reading the next book. I might read it, but it might not be anytime soon.

This week I choose Chasing Justice by Danielle Stewart

Piper wasn't sure how she had let this conversation get away from her. This is what happened when she let little pieces of her former self show through, people always wanted to dig deeper. If she hadn't been lost for a minute in the majesty of the setting sun falling behind the tree line, then she would have been more effective in guiding the conversation.
