End of Days by Susan Ee: Review

Synopsis:

End of Days is the explosive conclusion to Susan Ee’s bestselling Penryn & the End of Days trilogy.

After a daring escape from the angels, Penryn and Raffe are on the run. They’re both desperate to find a doctor who can reverse the twisted changes inflicted by the angels on Raffe and Penryn’s sister. As they set off in search of answers, a startling revelation about Raffe’s past unleashes dark forces that threaten them all.

When the angels release an apocalyptic nightmare onto humans, both sides are set on a path toward war. As unlikely alliances form and strategies shift, who will emerge victorious? Forced to pick sides in the fight for control of the earthly realm, Raffe and Penryn must choose: Their own kind, or each other?

"We are soldiers, Penryn. Legendary warriors willing to make legendary sacrifices. We do not ask. We do not choose."

I've been waiting for End of Days for what feels like ages. I'm so glad that I finally got it. And read the whole thing within a day. It's a wild finale with a somewhat surprising, but still satisfying conclusion. I enjoy every second of reading it and I will miss this trilogy.

This book is very different from the previous two. In Angelfall and World After, the tension builds up slowly. Intricate but can be a little bit frustrating at times. In this book, however, the plot cuts to the chase as Penryn and Raffe rushes to get Raffe's wings reattached and stop Uriel from initiating the final apocalypse. The taste of excitement and danger is palpable everywhere in this book. So much so that you can't possibly imagine the ending of the story, because there are so many things working against them. Of course, like I said before, I get an ending that I was hoping for, but not without consequences. But that's the beauty of the trilogy. Both of our beloved protagonists have to bear the consequences and try to make the best of it. Happiness certainly doesn't come easy for them.

It's impossible to talk about End of Days without talking about, well, Penryn and Raffe. Penryn is still the witty and amazing heroine that I love. Although the effect is subtle, she's stronger than ever. She's able to recognize the situation and make hard choices. Choices that can break hearts. Endurance has always been one of her best traits, but it is amplified in this book. Even though endurance doesn't mean that happiness and peace will eventually come, Penryn certainly deserves some form of peace. Raffe is also more bold in more ways than one. His reaction towards the relationship between Penryn and himself is much more prominent. He has shown more emotion and mental struggles than he ever had in the previous books. It's fascinating to see into the mind of Raffe, even though it's not a direct observation. Both of them have changed quite a bit since the events in Angelfall unfold. They went through a lot together and they have the ending they deserved. But despite the obstacles, they still manage to preserve the one thing that I love most above them - their bickering. It's always fun to read about them teasing each other and making jokes. The sort of lightness helps balance the tense situation.

The book itself is about tough choices, tough love and basically tough everything. But easy is no fun. Sacrifices are made when the humans are making their last-stand in this finale. Hard decisions are made when they decided to let go of each other for the better. Bearing burdens is commonplace. But the outcome of every tear shed and every blood dripped is perfect. End of Days couldn't be a better conclusion to a dynamic trilogy.

World After: Review

Synopsis:

In this sequel to the bestselling fantasy thriller, Angelfall, the survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape back together what's left of the modern world.

When a group of people capture Penryn's sister Paige, thinking she's a monster, the situation ends in a massacre. Paige disappears. Humans are terrified. Mom is heartbroken.

Penryn drives through the streets of San Francisco looking for Paige. Why are the streets so empty? Where is everybody? Her search leads her into the heart of the angels' secret plans where she catches a glimpse of their motivations, and learns the horrifying extent to which the angels are willing to go.

Meanwhile, Raffe hunts for his wings. Without them, he can't rejoin the angels, can't take his rightful place as one of their leaders. When faced with recapturing his wings or helping Penryn survive, which will he choose?

Okay, I've been hyperventilating since last week because... you know, it's World After and I really, really like Angelfall. It's certain that my energy used on hyperventilating doesn't go to waste. This book is also pretty awesome even though there are a few minor flaws. Susan Ee definitely can deliver a great sequel for a book as good as Angelfall

World After has a great start. First sentence:

"Everyone thinks I'm dead."

Okay that totally has me hooked up right there. I know I won't be disappointed for other fans who waited 2 years for the book and for myself. And it doesn't disappoint. There are so many action scenes linking all the events together and some are really brutal and well, post-apocalyptic. The chain of events is unbreakable. I'm so ridiculously happy to see Penryn back in action and is more fierce than before.

The Sword of Light (Raffe's Sword) is also one of the big parts in the book. It would not be the same without it. (Spoiler!) Throughout the book both Penryn and we can get so much from the Sword. Glimpses of Raffe fighting and Penryn mimicking him in the visions (whatever the hell that is). And oh, the glimpses of Raffe's emotions. Speaking of Raffe's emotions, I must admit it's very unique to see one person/angel's emotion through our narrator's eyes. Although there aren't much of that, I'll totally take them all. Penryn giving the Sword an accidental name is very, very hilarious. One of my favorite parts of the book (End of Spoiler)

Here's Raffe, who is mostly absent from the book. I really miss him. BUT, like I said before, we get glimpses of Raffe's emotions through the sword and I think that's enough to say that he's still present in the book. When he's back, he's just as light and carefree with Penryn as before, teasing her and stuff. And really protective too, more so than in Angelfall if you ask me. He's just like the Raffe we are familiar with in Angelfall. I have a huge grin plastered on my face since Raffe reappears. I will not talk about the romance shared between Raffe and Penryn because I'm sure I will not be able to stop swooning or stop revealing too many spoilers or stop bursting into a huge ring of happy rainbow. Let's just say it's hot and sweet at the same time.

Penryn's family makes a significant contribution to the book, unlike Angelfall. Without Penryn's mother and Paige, World After would definitely not be the same. Penryn's mother... well, she's just as crazy as before, if not more. But her craziness does get her and Penryn to somewhere and actually helping Penryn, unlike Angelfall. Well, what an irony, considering the fact that not only she's crazy but I don't like her. And here's Paige, which is not like the little girl Penryn described in Angelfall and actually shows up to make up parts of the book. Although she's a secondary character, she links up the two books. Without her there's no Angelfall or even World After. I kinda like that little girl, although she's as creepy as in Angelfall.

In many ways World After is just as good as Angelfall. But somehow Angelfall is more entertaining than World After. But no matter what, World After is a sequel that will not disappoint and you won't wanna miss.

Cover Reveal: World After by Susan Ee

I really like Angelfall, and I'm really happy to see the sequel, World After, finally has a cover! It's not as colorfl and complex as the first one, but I think it's wicked.

It's safe to say I'm really excited because Angelfall is pretty cool.

And the white bat wings... Raffe. Bat wings, yet white

World After will be released on November 19 (Kindle Edition)

This time I choose Angelfall (Penryn & The End of Days #1) by Susan Ee

Blood sprays everywhere, showering the others. They struggle to hold him down as the blood makes him slick. Snow twists and kicks two of the bullies with lightning speed. They end up rolling on the asphalt, curling around their stomachs. For a moment, as the remaining two angels fight to keep him down, I think he'll manage to bust loose.

Angelfall: Review

Synopsis:

It's been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.

Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.

Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.

Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels' stronghold in San Francisco where she'll risk everything to rescue her sister and he'll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.

Okay, I don't get why I didn't finish this book when I first read it almost a year ago because this book is AMAZING! I can't believe I stopped reading it after just a few pages when I first opened the book. It's fast-paced and action-packed. And surprisingly amusing despite the whole apocalypse thing. I really, really like this book.

There are so many good parts that I can't even begin to list it. But the best part of the book is that it doesn't  bullshit aroud things that have almost nothing to do with the main plot of this story. Everything is tightly tangled with the main line of the story. Sine I hate bullshiting around so... this is a very good book for me. And angel apocalypse thing? This is mad cool for me because hardly anyone uses a CELESTIAL being as an enemy of humans (except Angel Burn, I guess, and that's not even about apocalypse until... well, Angel Fever.). The characters are just... they are strong and passionate about things that they care about. They are really lovable if not a little... cliche. Those are the characters that you will definitely like to meet.

There's a minor flaw though. It's about the apocalypse thing. I mean it when I say I love the whole apocalypse concept. But... it's just that all the stuff in the book could still happen even if the apocalypse didn't happen. The apocalypse hardly matters in this book and I think the author can develop more interesting stuff based on this background. But hey, the book is still awesome, so this flaw doesn't matter much.

I heard that it's gonna be a movie and THAT'S A MOVIE I CERTAINLY WILL GO TO WATCH. I don't care if I can't watch it in my country. I will find ways to accomplish because this book is awesome. I highly recommend this series. And I can't wait for World After, the second book of the series. Glad that I read it now because if I read earlier, it will be hard to wait such a long time for the sequel.
