Wicked: Review

Synopsis:

Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

***

I haven't been laughing for a long time. And this got me. Every single time. It's full of humor and cute awkwardness. It's pretty intense too. However, it's definitely not as intense as I thought it would be. At least not in the action sense. This is the only reason I give it a four instead of five out of five stars on Goodreads. You can't deny the tense emotions between Ivy and Ren though, and man, wasn't that hot.

The biggest difference between Ivy and all the other heroines I've ever read about is that she has a boyfriend who is, well, dead now. It's one of the vital factors that shapes her personality that we see in the book. While I think most would be able to get over it after three years, I think a lot of them would still mourn over it and probably lose their own sense of humor. I can tell that Ivy has not. It's actually impressive, how she can string witty things together after her pain and loss. Ren is similar to Ivy in some ways. The loss they've suffered, and the sense of humor. It's cute seeing them bicker over trivial things. For some reason Ren is not as realistic as I thought. Sure, he's a nice guy and a little bossy and certainly drool-worthy. But while other Jennifer's male characters brand permanent images in my mind, it doesn't happen with Ren. Well, at least not yet. I have a feeling this will eventually happen. Anyway, I can't really connect to Ren. Maybe it's because the length of the book is really short. Or at least it feels short. I have high hopes on Ren's character, though, even though he's being transparent in this book.

I think we should also talk about the third wheel here, aka Tink. He's awesome. Tink is a brownie, which means he's from the Otherworld. Tink is full of little secrets. But he's probably the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life. He can practically string every sex-related (or genitalia-related) things in every single sentence. And he likes Amazon Prime. Seriously. A mythical creature likes to talk about sex like a drunk college chick and loves to buy things online. This is as awkward as it is funny. But like I said, Tink is full of secrets. So I guess he'll be a really good character in the book.

Wicked is a quick read for me. I've been under stress lately and this is the perfect book for me to relax a little bit. I'm really grateful and I will certainly read the next book.
